Film Show: Not in our name

On Thursday  19th September Manchester PSC will be showing the excellent documentary film “Not In Our Name” by Gabrielle Tierney.

On the 12th August 2006, during the Israeli military campaign against Lebanon, 9 men stormed an arms factory in Derry, Northern Ireland. They caused an estimated £350,00 worth of damage and were arrested. They denied nothing, yet the jury acquitted them of all charges.

Film showing & discussion: “Our Story”, Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi

Dr. Mustafa Barghouti was born in Jerusalem in 1954. He is a  is a Palestinian physician, activist, and politician. In June 2002, Dr. Barghouthi co-founded the Palestinian National Initiative, which aims to unite Palestinians in Israel/Palestine & in the Diaspora.

After the film there will be time for an informal discussion on the current situation in Palestine, the Apartheid Wall, and the use of Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions (BDS) as a form of international, non-violent resistance to Israeli Apartheid against the Palestinian people.

The film Open Bethlehem is a story of Leila Sansour’s homecoming to the  town. The film spans seven momentous years in the life of Bethlehem, revealing a city of astonishing beauty and political strife under occupation.

Film director Leila Sansour returns to Bethlehem to make a film about her home town, soon to be encircled by a wall. She left the city as a teenager thinking that Bethlehem was too small and provincial. She never wanted to return but this time she is making an exception. She intends her film to be a tribute to her late father, founder of Bethlehem University, and a man regarded as a hero by his town’s folk. As Bethlehem approaches ruin her decision to flee this sleepy town, taken much to her father’s regret, comes to haunt her.
