Eurovision 2019 Protest at BBC Sat 1st Dec

Join the protest at the BBC Headquarters in Salford Quays against 2019 Eurovision Song Contest being hosted by Israel.

  • We are calling on the BBC to withdraw from the competitions
  • We urge songwriters and performers to boycott the contest, just as artists once boycotted the South African apartheid regime.

As part of the protest there will be  a Palestinian Dabke performance from the amazing Hawiyya dance company.

Israel regularly uses culture to cover-up, justify and distract from its oppressive regime of military occupation and apartheid against the Palestinian people.

Protest: End The Siege of Gaza – Stop Arming Israel

On Saturday 24th November we will be having a protest against the siege of Gaza and UK complicity in Israel’s violations of Palestinian human rights starting. It will start at 12:00 in Piccadilly Gardens.

The siege of Gaza and the regular Israeli military attacks  have continued now for more than 10 years. Since March 30th Palestinians have been protesting against the inhumane conditions created by Israels illegal blockade, and to reaffirm their right as refugees to return to their homes, a right that is enshrined in international refugee  law. Despite the protests being largely peaceful in nature, Israel has used lethal force including against medics, humanitarian workers, press, and children. Israeli forces have killed over 200 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and injured more than 18,000.

The UK is complicit in Israel’s violations of Palestinian human rights through our arms trade. Despite the illegality of Israel’s occupation and apartheid system, the UK is one of the main arms exporters to Israel as well as a major purchaser of Israeli weapons and weapon technology. The chain of complicity extends to our high streets  as UK banks, including HSBC and Barclays, are heavily involved with arms industry and international trade.

Public Meeting: “Look into their eyes”  A talk by Zara Rivzi

Zara Rivzi visited Palestine as an Ecumenical Accompanier. Based in Bethlehem, her talk will reflect on her experiences as an Ecumenical Accompanier in Bethlehem, with a particular focus on the experiences of Palestinian children living under Israeli occupation.

Like many areas throughout the West Bank, Bethlehem has seen an escalating number of child arrests, night raids and detentions. Zara will share some of the painful experiences of the young people she met who were subjected to this. What does it take for an adult soldier to harm a child? What rhetoric is fuelling the Israel’s dehumanising treatment of Palestinians, including children? The talk invites us to face the painful reality of childhood under occupation and to be a voice for the voiceless.

Women’s Football Tour – Film Show & Discussion Women

Film of 2017 women’s football tour to Palestine with introduction and Q&A with film maker and footballer.

This documentary film follows a group of women footballers from the UK and Germany on the football trip of a lifetime to Palestine.

Whether playing organised matches in West Bank refugee camps or informal kick-arounds on the rock-strewn pitches of hill-top villages of South Hebron, football is the common language as cultural barriers are crossed and new friendships established.

The film’s poignant testimonies highlight cultural issues surrounding local women’s participation in sport as well as the struggle to remain steadfast on their homelands.

National Day of Action on HSBC – Stop Arming Israel

Join us in Manchester Piccadilly 15th September for the National Day of Action against HSBC and it’s investments in Israel’s Arms manufacturers and suppliers. Stand with Palestinians facing the horrors of Israel’s military machine every single day, and hold complicit companies to account.

HSBC holds shares several arms companies including Elbit Systems which manufactures and supplies the Israeli military with drones, used regularly in attacks on Palestinian civilians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. It was recently revealed that Elbit drone Hermes 450 was part of an attack in 2014 in which four Palestinian children were killed on a beach in the Gaza Strip while playing football. In total, HSBC holds over £800m worth of shares in, and is involved in syndicated loans worth over £19bn to, companies that sell weapons and military equipment to the Israeli government.

In recent weeks Israel has intensified its bombing campaigns against Gaza yet again. HSBC is complicit with these attacks.

There have been actions and protests up and down the country at HSBC branches and it is important we grow the movement now to pressure HSBC in to ending their complicity with Israel’s arms trade

Come and take action at Manchester Piccadilly gardens at 1pm Saturday 15th September

Join the campaign to expose and end HSBC’s investments in Israel’s arms trade.

Film Show “Occupation Of The American Mind”

The Occupation of the American Mind Film Show + Discussion
Narrated by Roger Waters  Directed by Sut Jhally   1h 22min
Thursday 12th July Start 7:00 pm Friends Meeting House, 6 Mount Street, Manchester M2 5NS
Entry Free

This replaces a meeting with Hassan Muamer from the West Bank village of Battir scheduled for the same evening as he has not been able to get a visa to travel to the UK.

Summary of Film
Israel’s ongoing military occupation of Palestinian territory and repeated invasions of the Gaza strip have triggered a fierce backlash against Israeli policies virtually everywhere in the world — except the United States. The Occupation of the American Mind takes an eye-opening look at this critical exception, zeroing in on pro-Israel public relations efforts within the U.S.

Narrated by Roger Waters and featuring leading observers of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and U.S. media culture, the film explores how the Israeli government, the U.S. government, and the pro-Israel lobby have joined forces, often with very different motives, to shape American media coverage of the conflict in Israel’s favour.

From the U.S.-based public relations campaigns that emerged in the 1980s to today, the film provides a sweeping analysis of Israel’s Continue reading Film Show “Occupation Of The American Mind”
